Curran Coat of Arms, Family Crest and Curran Family History

Curran Family History

The Curran ancient family history was found in the irishsurnames.com archives. Meaning 'champion' or 'hero', this Irish surname originated in County Waterford, gradually spreading to Kildare, Kerry and Leitrim. One sept was of the Ui Maine, called O'Currain, one of whom was Simon O'Currin, Bishop of Kilfenora, 1302. Of the South Leinster sept was Andrew O'Curran, who was appointed Prior of Glascarrig in 1411 by the Pope. The Leitrim Currans were a Bardic family. An outstanding person of the name was John Philpot Curran, 1750-1817, orator and patriot. He was born in County Cork. His daughter was Sarah Curran, 1781-1808, who was a romantic and tragic figure who was engaged to be married to the famous revolutionary, Robert Emmet. The Curran family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Curran descendants.
