Daly Family History

This family have a continuous record of literary achievements throughout the history of Ireland. The first of the great Daly poets was Curonnacht O'Dalaigh, which is the Irish form of the name. The sept was located in Magheradernon, County Westmeath, and were of the Southern Ui Neill. From there they successfully spread throughout Ireland. Two of the more modern poets were Robert Daly, 1783-1872, and John O'Daly, 1800-1878. O'Daly may be said to be the greatest name in Gaelic Literature. Other septs may have produced one or two famous individuals, but this family have a continuous record of literary achievements from the twelfth to the fifteenth century.The Daly family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago.
