Smith The name Smith in Ireland is the fifth most frequently found in the country due in part to the number of English and Scottish settlers who arrived in the seventeenth century. A number of native Gaelic Septs adopted Smith as the anglicized version of their name however, and these include the MacGabhann and O'Gabhann Septs of County Cavan where the name is still especially prevalent. Smyth is used interchangeably as a variant.
