Thompson The name Thompson in Ireland is of immigrant origin having been brought to the country by settlers who arrived into the Province of Ulster, especially in the seventeenth century. The Mac Thamhais native Gaelic Sept of County Cavan sometimes anglicized their name to Thompson instead of the more usual MacCavish.
