Mcshanag / Family History
The name McShanag is a variant of the name Fox in Ireland which has a number of origins. This name was adopted by a number of different native Gaelic Septs as well as being brought to the country by settlers from England. The O'Sionnaigh Sept of County Cork and the Mac an tSionnaigh Sept of County Armagh were two such Septs who, in addition to Fox and McShanag, also changed their name to Shinnick and MacAshinagh respectively.
A Sept is an ancient Clan-like collective describing a group of persons whose immediate ancestors bore a common surname and inhabited the same territory.
