This name is of English descent and is found in many ancient manuscripts in that country. Examples of such are a Johannes Faryman and a Thomas Feryman who were recorded in the 'Poll Tax' of the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1379.

In Ireland Ferry is an anglicized form of the Gaelic O'Fearadhaigh name which was also anglicized as Fairy and MacAree. These were a sept of the Cenel Conaill located in County Donegal. In modern times County Sligo is home to large number of descendants of this sept.The Ferry family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago.
