Vaughan Coat of Arms, Family Crest and Vaughan Family History

Vaughan Family History

The Vaughan ancient family history was found in the archives. Meaning 'the little', this is a nickname for a person of small stature. Variants include Vaughn and Vaygham. This name is of Welsh Descent spreading to England, Ireland and Scotland in early times, and is found in many mediaeval manuscripts throughout the above countries. Examples of such are a William Vachan, County Salop, who was recorded in the 'Hundred Rolls', England, in the year 1273 and an Evan Vaughan, also of Salop, who was recorded in the University of Oxford, in the year 1601. The Vaughans have held the same estate in Trawscoed for 800 years, and originated with Adda Vychan, who married the daughter of Ievan Goch, in the year 1200. In Ireland families bearing the name Vaughan were usually branches of the Mohan and Maughan Gaelic septs. The Gaelic name O'Beachain is found in County Clare where the town of Ballyvaughan still exists to this very day.The Vaughan family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Vaughan descendants.
