Martin The names Martin and Martyn in Ireland have a number of origins. These names are sometimes used as abbreviations of the name Gilmartin. Anglo-Norman settlers also brought in these names and became esatablished as one of the 'Tribes of Galway'. The native Gaelic MacMairtin Sept of County Tyrone were a branch of the O'Neills.
