Archer Family History

The ancient origin of the name Archer was found in the archives. Archer is an occupational name taken from a professional bowman. Variants of this name include Archerson, Archur, Artcher and Archurs. This name is usually of Anglo-Saxon descent spreading to the Celtic countries of Ireland, Scotland and Wales in early times and is found in many mediaeval manuscripts throughout these countries. Examples of such are a Thomas le Archer of County Derbyshire who was recorded in the 'Hundred Rolls', England, in the year 1273. A Roberte Garrnett and Alyce Archer were recorded as having been married in Saint Michael, Cornhill, in the year 1567. In Ireland the Archers have been on record since the thirteenth century and were one of the famous 'Tribes of Kilkenny'. Ralph le Archer was Burgess in Dublin as early as the year 1190. In County Westmeath the place-name Archerstown was recorded in the year 1221 but the name is still mostly associated with County Kilkenny. The Archer family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Archer descendants.
