The family history of the ancient name McDaniel was found in the irishsurnames.com archives. The name McDaniel is often a variant of the name McDonnell who are descendants of the famous Scottish Clan from Argyle, whose Chief was Lord of the Isles. They arrived in Ireland in the thirteenth century and established themselves as Gallowglasses to the Chiefs in Ulster Province in the North of the country. The family gradually gained much territory and by the fifteenth century were well established in the Glens of Antrim. Randal MacSorley MacDonnell, the head of the family, was created Earl of Antrim in the year 1620. In County Kerry in Ireland the name McDaniel was a name assumed by a family of Welsh origin since the thirteenth century. It is also found as O'Daniel in County Tipperary. The McDaniel family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including McDaniel descendants.
