Redmond Family History
The family history of the ancient name Redmond was found in the irishsurnames.com archives. Redmond is a Hiberno-Norman name of some importance. The first in Ireland was Alexander Raymond who was of the same stock as Raymond le Gros, one of the best known of the Anglo-Norman invaders. The name soon became Redmond, and in Gaelic it was rendered as Reamonn. The family obtained considerable grants of land in Wexford, and throughout the eight centuries since they settled in Ireland they have always been associated with that County and prominent in its affairs. The Ortelius Map marks them as a sept in the barony of Forth, County Wexford. The Composition Book of Connacht of 1585 includes the name McRedmond among the leading men of County Mayo. At the present time the Redmonds are almost entirely concentrated in the three eastern Counties of Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin. The MacRedmonds of Galway and Offaly were a branch of the Burkes. The Redmond family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Redmond descendants.
