The family history of the ancient name Blaney was found in the irishsurnames.com archives. w name Blaney is usually of Welsh and Irish origin and has a number of variant spellings including Blayney, Blainey, Blaynee, Blaynes, Blaynie and Blainie. This name is of locational origin describing a person who lived in an upland or elevated settlement, or at the top of a mountain or hill. The root word for this name is the old Welsh word 'blaen' meaning 'tip' or 'point'. The ancient Welsh families of the name are said to be descended from Brockwel Ysgythrog who was a King of Powys in Eastern Wales in the sixth century. An early record of the name refers to a Leuan Blaenau in the year 1406 in the list of 'Burgesses of the Town of Welshpool'. The name Blayney has for centuries been associated with Ireland where the large town of Castleblayney in County Monaghan records their presence and influence. Sir Edward Blayney settled in Ireland in the year 1598, later becoming Lord Monaghan. Other bearers of the name in Ireland may have arrived into Ulster Province in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries from England, Scotland and Wales. The Blaney family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Blaney descendants.
