The name McAuley in Ireland is derived from two native Gaelic Septs. The MacAmhlaoibh Sept were located in County Fermanagh and were a branch of the ruling Maguires. The MacAmhalghaidh Sept were located in County Westmeath where the name is sometimes anglicized as Magawley. McAuliffe is another variation whilst still others descend from Scottish settlers named Macaulay.
